2009 - Adios and Vaya Con Dios

2009 has been a long year and it's all about to come to an end. I realize that it is also the end of a decade and a very eventful one at that. Usually around this time many media outlets will come up with the 'year in review' and the "decade in review.' So after thinking about it for a bit I am going to put up a few of the fun things this past year that I was blessed to do or that were impactful to me.

So here is my "Legendary Year" (In no specific order)
- Traveled to Bermuda
- Finished my second year as manager of the Memphis Soccer team
- Went to the Music City Bowl in Nashville
- Completely renovated the kitchen and demolished our shed
- Spent more time with my father
- Kodi had ACL surgery
- Weddings and Babys!! (None of our own though)
- Finished school strong once again
- Purchased a Bose surround sound system
- Another year with a incredible wife
- Turned 30 something...

One other thing. On my history final, my professor asked us what we thought was the one thing that 50 years from now would be in the history books. So I'm thinking...what are some things that happened this past decade that 50 years from now we'll talk about? The obvious one to me will be 9/11, which is what I put on my test. Some others that I can think of off the top of my head are:

First black president, Y2K, iPod, Social networking sites explode, Katrina, Tsunami in India, Pope John Paul dies, Va Tech shooting, Fidel Castro retires.

Now, not all of these will grace the history books, but these are some the biggest events that I can think of over the last decade. Anything I left off? I tried to condense it to really large events.

In case I don't get to say it to you in person, Happy New Year.

After Christmas Weekend

Saturday, Dec. 26th

After a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends, Heather and I decided to wake up a little late on Saturday morning. After cleaning up around the house and playing with the dogs for a little bit, we decided to watch one of the movies we got for Christmas. Here were our choices:

The Proposal, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, My Sister's Keeper, The Hangover, Terminator: Salvation, Transformers 2, and Wolverine.

Which movie do you think I chose for the family enjoyment? Hmmmmm? Well, I did what any loving husband would do. I chose to watch The Proposal with my wife so that we could reminisce on how we got engaged.

Ok, so that wasn't exactly what went down...

What really happened was that I did what any male with a 50 inch Plasma and Bose Acoustimass 10 surround sound stereo system would do. I picked Terminator: Salvation. Boy does it sound good. Maybe the best surround sound movie I've ever heard.

So about halfway through the movie, one of my close friends Brent G showed up. Brent was in town for Christmas and heading back to Nashville where he lives. I hitched a ride with him up to Nashville to go see my beloved Wildcats play on Sunday in the Music City Bowl against the Clemson Tigers. It was good to catch up with Brent as we don't see each other very often. I've been blessed to have some really great friends in my life and he is definitely one of them. He has made a point to not let distance be a factor in communication since he moved. Brent is usually good about calling once a month to get an update on the lives of the McGoo's. I must admit, I'm not the best phone talker as anyone that knows me can attest. However, the car ride up to Nashville gave us ample opportunity to catch up on life.

Once we arrived in Nashville we met up for dinner with my brother-in-law Brent K. (Since we're talking about two Brents, we'll label them as Brent G (friend) and Brent K (in-law)). We met up at a new Mexican restaurant in the Franklin area (suburb of Nashville) called "Chuys." It's a Tex-Mex type of restaurant and was very good. I really was surprised because most Mexican restaurants I go to have what seems to be the exact same food. When I say that, I mean it seems like they order their food from the same distributor because it all looks alike. "Chuys" was very different and even made my tacos the right way (sour cream in the taco and not outside) which gives them high marks in my book.

From there we headed over to the movie theater to see the movie "Avatar." If you remember from the previous blog, Brent K and I didn't get to see the movie on Christmas eve, so we were happy to watch it. We tossed around the idea of seeing "Sherlock Holmes" but Brent K had promised his wife that he would see if with her. Brent G had already seen "Avatar" and wanted to see "Sherlock Holmes", so he was really cool in sucking it up and seeing this again. Just another mark of a good friend...going to see a movie you've already seen just to spend some time with someone.

"Avatar" was everything people have said about it. It was visually stunning, as we saw the movie in 3-D. Now, I'm not one of those that has gotten into the 3-D phenomenon, but I was very impressed. I will say that my eyes got very tired about halfway through and it wasn't due to sleep. Watching 3-D really does take a toll on your eyes and there were a couple of times in the movie that I had to rub my eyes. The movie has also drawn a lot of heat in Christian circles for it's religious undertones of Pantheism, but honestly, it didn't seem any different that that of the Native American movies I've seen before such as "Dances With Wolves" or "New World." Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the movie and was glad to spend some time with the Brents.

Sunday, Dec 27th
I stayed at Brent G's house and we woke up to meet Brent K at church. Brent K and Robin attend Crosspoint Community Church in Nashville which has a younger, more progressive demographic. I have been before but I wanted to take Brent G with me so that he could see the church since he is still looking for churches in the Nashville area. Unfortunately I didn't get to see Robin as she had to work that morning but Brent K and his sister Elizabeth met us for church.

After church we headed to Logans Steakhouse where Brent K got to use one of his 10 gift cards he received for Christmas. I've never seen quite a deck of gift cards as Brent K had in his wallet (I was/am jealous). From there Brent G and I said our goodbyes and headed back to his house for some rest and relaxation with some NFL football. Now I haven't mentioned this but Sunday was the finals of my fantasy football league and yours truly was in it. I'll save the fantasy stories for another day, but I was blessed to win my league with the help of Tom Brady and a few other folks, so this day of relaxation was rather nice.

Around 5:45pm Brent G and I headed over to a sports pub to meet up with my friend Steve who was on his way back to Memphis. Steve had spent Christmas up in Northern Kentucky where his family lives and was driving through Nashville. I had convinced Steve to attend with UK game with me and then give me a ride back to Memphis...see, I told you I had good friends. So we met up with Steve and then said goodbye to Brent G and headed to the game. It was a great game to watch and the one thing that I'll take from it was that it was COLD. Freezing cold to be exact as the temp was in the mid 20's.

Steve won his fantasy league this year as well, so this is a pic of two champs

Steve "roughing it"

Unfortunately my Cats didn't win their fourth bowl in a row but it was a good game to watch. After the game we headed back to the car for the long trip to Memphis. Since the game got over rather late, I didn't get into bed until 3am Monday morning. Thank goodness that this college student was on Christmas break.

Now it's off to do honey do's. I've got quite a list of things to work on. Something tells me that one way or another you'll hear about them.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

This past Christmas weekend was about as busy as it could get for me. Here's a time line of how it went.

Thursday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve)
Got up that morning and cleaned up around the house a bit before heading out for a long day. First we dropped off my dad's car at the airport around 10:30 so that he would have a vehicle to get home with. He's been in NJ for work and stays with us when he comes in town. Then we headed over to the Wilson's (my in-laws) for some quality time with them and Brent and Robin
(my brother and sister in law). B&R live in Nashville and we don't get to hang with them as much as we like to so we wanted to get in as much time with them as we could.

Brent and Robin

We met up and went to lunch at Red Robin for a good burger and then were going to try and make a movie. We had intended to try and make a movie but the movie we wanted to see, Avatar, didn't start until 3:25 and with it being a 160 min movie, we wouldn't make our next scheduled event. Much to our disappointment we didn't get to see the movie and thus headed back to the house for a little down time and some family time on the Wii.

Our next scheduled event was Christmas Eve dinner at the Everitts. This is Lloyd's side of the family, so it's a pretty large get together. There we caught up on all the happenings of the past year, ate a great meal, and enjoyed a "Dirty Santa" gift exchange. I came away with a Best Buy gift card and Mrs. McGoo game away with some wine and wine glasses. So all in all a fun filled night with a lot of family.

Here are a few clips from the event:

Here is Robin, Mrs. McGoo, and Kelsey.

Here is everyone getting in on that spread.

From there we headed home for what was a well needed night of sleep. (I couldn't sleep, so I blogged)

Friday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day)
The Mrs. and I woke up around 8am to go out to the living room and open gifts with each other. I must say she does pretty well in the gift department. Just some of the things she got me were: A book on farts called "Farts: A Spotters Guide", some camping supplies, some dress shoes, and a few other things.

From there we headed over to the Wilson's for a immediate family gift exchange. There we each sit in a large circle and watch everyone open on gift and then move on to the next person. This way we extend the fun out a little more than everyone just starting in a free-for-all and missing out on people's expressions. This is the area of my life that I feel really blessed as my in-laws really spoil us. It is not everyday that someone says their in-laws are the best, but this is truly the case....they ROCK...

...and Roll.

After opening gifts with them and having a brunch, we said our goodbyes to Brent and Robin as they headed off to Nashville and we headed back to our house for an early dinner with my brother Kevin, his family, and my father.

My Dad, Me, and Kevin tending to the cooker

I, with a little help, deep fried a turkey for dinner and wifey made some delicious sides. Once we were through eating, we gathered near the Christmas tree and opened up presents with each other. My favorite part is definitely watching my niece, Grace, open her gifts.

Here is Grace holding up one of her many presents

After that we got back in the car and headed back over to the Wilson's for a Wii Tennis Tourney where after I laid the smack down on Kelsey (Sis-in-law), Mrs. McGoo, and Cindy (Mom-in-law), Lloyd (father-in-law) defended the Wilson honor by beating me 2 games out of 3, thus restoring order in the Wilson/McGoo chain of command.

After picking on Kelsey for as long as I could...cause I love doing it...we headed back home for some much needed rest and relaxation.

All in all it was a fun filled two days of Christmas cheer! I'm so thankful to have a wonderful family to share the celebration of Chistmas with.

Stay tuned for the Sat/Sun activities...

My Christmas Story

I'm a big fan of Christmas movies. Check that, I'm a huge fan/sucker for Christmas movies. Ever since I was a kid I always love this time of the year where I could cuddle up next to the fireplace or near our Christmas tree and watch some holiday favorites on TV.

My favorite Christmas movie is "It's a Wonderful Life". Some of my other favorites are the normal holiday classics like "Frosty the Snowman", "Rudolph", "Miracle on 34th St", and "White Christmas." Just recently (in the last 5 years) I've taking a liking to "Elf."

However, the one that reminds me the most of my childhood is none other than "A Christmas Story." I can remember going to see that with my brother for his birthday (Dec 14) when it first came out. I instantly fell in love with the movie and have watched it ever since it came out in the early 80's. For those that don't know about the movie (how you wouldn't I don't know), it follows a young boy named Ralphie Parker from the start of the Christmas season on up to Christmas Day. It is set in the late 1930's and the main plot of the movie is Ralphie is trying to secure a Red Ryder BB gun for his Christmas gift. There are also a lot of subplots in the movie that help make it a Christmas classic.

One of the reasons I really love the movie is because it actually reminds me of my childhood. I was always out to try and get that big score for Christmas. While Ralphie was out to get his Red Ryder BB gun, I on the other hand was out to catch Santa Claus in the act. I'm not kidding! This mission was almost as important to me as opening presents. Every year I would plot out my course of action on how I could catch the red hooded chimney climber. I can remember falling asleep underneath the tree with the idea that he would have to move me, thus waking me up, in the process of putting gifts under the tree. No such luck. It took a few years of failure for me to realize that I couldn't catch him that way. So I tried another method. I'd lay his cookies on a plate and lay it on me so when he came down the chimney and couldn't resist the Christmas cookies, he'd have pick my hands off them in order to eat them. That was a failed attempt also as I woke up the next morning with cookie crumbs all over me with an empty glass of milk that he helped himself to. I can remember one year I was determined to stay up all night and wait for the slightest noise and pop out on him in the middle of the night. That night I dozed off for the smallest bit of time and was woken up by hoof scuffs on the roof and jumped out of bed and ran to the living room only to discover that I was too late. Santa bested me once again.

I became more and more discouraged as I failed in my attempts to catch Santa. Yet year after year I'd spend days leading up to Christmas taking suggestions from my friends in how I should nab the gift giver. It didn't help that my dad filled my head with stories of him actually seeing him go up the chimney when he was a child. This made my desire to follow my dads footsteps and catch Santa in the act all the more important. But I eventually gave up. As my eyes were opened to the secrets of Christmas and the real meaning of Christmas, my perceptions of it all changed. It's a wonderful feeling knowing what Christmas really means to me as a Christian and how my savior was born to free me from my sin. I wouldn't trade knowing that for anything in this world.

However, there's still a small part of me that misses that challenge of trying to find Santa and finally putting to rest the case of the vanishing toy maker.

It's midnight Christmas eve, so I'm heading to bed. Merry Christmas!!! Did you hear that?....

Wasting Time

I woke up this morning with religion on the brain. This is definitely the season of "religion." Someone once told me that this season gets to be about the "religious C.E.O.'s." Christmas and Easter Only.

That made me think of this quote...

“I believe that the greatest trick of the devil is not to get us into some sort of evil, but rather have us wasting time. This is why the devil tries so hard to get Christians to be religious. If he can sink a man’s mind into habit, he will prevent his heart from engaging God.”

- Donald Miller- Blue Like Jazz

Hopefully with Christmas being around the corner, we're not just wasting our time. My prayers is that in this season there is Jesus and everything else is just details.

UK2K

I told myself I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't make my first post about UK Basketball. Thankfully, this is my second post so I'm in the clear.

Last night my beloved Wildcats of Kentucky reached a milestone not accomplished by anyone else in college basketball. They won their 2,000th game. In order to understand how many games that is think about this...If a team won 20 games a year, it would take 100 years to get to 2000. Keep in mind that in the early years of basketball, many teams only played 5-8 games a year. So it's quite an accomplishment.

There are actually two more teams this year that could reach the 2,000 wins milestone. Here's what the top four teams look like as of 12/22/09

Kentucky - 2,000
North Carolina - 1,992
Kansas - 1,980
Duke - 1,885

As you can see, UNC should get to that win total come conference play, while Kansas could theoretically get to the milestone with a deep run in the NCAA tourney (which they are expected to do). Hopefully Duke never reaches that milestone.

Enough about that...last night was about Kentucky Basketball and the fans of the Commonwealth. It brought back so many memories of as ESPN interviewed important figures in UK's past like Kenny "Sky" Walker, Jamal Mashburn, Joe B. Hall, and Kyle Macy. Those are just some of the names that live on in UK folklore.

One name that will be there (UK folklore) sooner than later is John Wall. I'll expound on John Wall some other time, but I'll just say he's pretty talented. He's actually already got his own dance. Trust me...look it up on Google. His dance has even gone viral and made it's way into a TV show, "Cougartown"

Here's the Wildcat Mascot and DeMarcus "Boogie" Cousins celebrating last night by doing the "John Wall Dance."

Baby steps onto the elevator

It was about 1am and I was restless. There was so much in my head and I couldn't make sense of it all. So I sat up and went out to the couch and started watching some TV thinking that would help clear my head and also help the Mrs sleep (When I'm restless, she doesn't sleep either). I've had so much on my mind lately as I've been trying to finish up the semester and I think my brain just went into overload. And it came to me, Mrs. McGoo blogs , why can't I?

So why blog? Aside from the fact that I'm more interesting than my trophy wife, why not?!?!

Maybe this can help get the me on the inside to the you on the outside? Make sense? Didn't think so. But this is how it is going to be. I don't promise good grammar, I don't promise that I'll make sense, I just promise that I'll try and put my thoughts on paper...err...the internet so I can clear my head.

A couple of things to expect...
I'll be pretty honest...brutally sometimes. I'll talk about my loves...My God, my wife, my family, my friends, my dogs, my teams, and everything else that gets clustered in my brain. I can't promise that everything I say will be popular or right, it will just be what I'm thinking at the time.

Are we clear? Good.

Couple of notes. UK2K. Also, I just made it into the finals of my fantasy league. Sorry E.

I'm going to sleep well tonight.

Cheers
